Money is not speech but money can certainly amplify speech. The Citizens United decision showed us how money can distort national elections. Our current mayoral contest shows us that money can make a disgruntled few look like a groundswell.
As has been the custom in past Ashland elections, Tonya Graham capped contributions to her campaign at $100. Her opponent did not. In a pandemic environment, with town hall meetings and doorstep conversations off the table, Tonya has approximately $1 to counter every $4 spent by her opponent. She needs 20 supporters to balance one $2,000 contribution to the other side.
What Tonya lacks in funding she offers in proven leadership. We can count on her to guide Ashland forward responsibly as we address climate change, social equity and difficult budget decisions. She has made the most of limited resources as a candidate. She will do the same as our mayor.
